The Riddle of Theistic Evolution, Part 3

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day,” Genesis 1:11-13.

Here we have the first “after his kind,” which would be a species or genus, perhaps. This repeats some ten times. What is it saying? God created the seed bearing plants and trees in a moment, complete as they were with total ability to reproduce their own kind, “whose seed is in itself.” Mendel’s laws testify that genetic variation has limits. New gene combinations are formed, but not entirely new genes; in other words, “lower” species do not advance to “higher” ones due to genetic boundaries. This might be exactly what the phrase “after his kind” implies.

Here we are three days into creation without the sun yet. How long can plants and trees survive without sunlight? How long can they survive without the carbon dioxide animals produce? Neither existed yet according to the Bible. Again the incongruity is staggering, and the order of organic life appearing is all wrong, according to Evolution. Flowering plants were a late arrival, well before humanity but long after more primitive life emerged from inorganic material.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also,” Genesis 1:14-16.

Let it be noted that very little is said regarding the stars in Scripture. The heavens declare the glory of God, Psalm 19:1. According to this passage they also were meant to help humanity gauge the passage of seasons in this universe of time and space. We have deified the stars since ancient times through astrology and our recent expansive and fruitless search for extra terrestrial life beyond our planet. The earth is the subject of God’s attention, and what God created in the heavens on day four appears only to have been created for the sake of our planet’s welfare. Evolutionists marvel at the composition of the earth and how it is suited in every way to sustain life; to them it is a chance series of billions of accidents bearing fortuitous results. Genesis tells a different story. God intended the earth to be where it was in space, and brought into being stars and the moon for light upon the earth.

The sun was created a day after the green grass, trees and seed bearing plants came into being. Had long ages been involved these plants would have perished for want of sunlight. Without the heat of the sun for long ages our earth would have been unfit for life to even begin as Evolution predicts it. Likewise according to Evolutionary theory the primitive atmosphere of earth was bereft of oxygen since an oxidizing atmosphere would not be conducive to organic evolution. A reducing atmosphere (the atmosphere evolutionists imagine existed long ago) would have had methane, hydrogen, ammonia and nitrogen. An oxidizing atmosphere (our actual one) has carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen and oxygen. Whereas an oxidizing atmosphere would be lethal to the chemical components outside living beings, a reducing atmosphere would be instantly lethal to any living organism since oxygen is essential for life. An oxidizing atmosphere would be utterly essential to sustain life.

Here we have the beginning of our spiraling galaxy, with the planets revolving about the sun. Reading this chapter with the humility and reverence for God’s word that a Christian should possess it is easy to see why it is written in Job that “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God (angels) shouted for joy,” as they watched their Creator forge the material universe, Job 38:7.

  1. I find it particularly interesting that he produced light before he created the sun or stars, on the very first day. While we think of the sun as the source of light, It was present even before the sun was created. While life is dependent on light, it is not dependent on the sun.
